safe water is accessible and affordable to all
Nearly 1 million people in California, largely in rural areas, are unable to turn on their tap and access clean, safe drinking water. Additionally, the cost of delivering clean, safe water is rising as utilities face new and emerging challenges and adapt to a changing climate. CUWA, in partnership with the State, environmental justice community, and other industry partners is advancing solutions to help water systems achieve sustainable compliance with public health requirements and support low-income customers while maintaining utility revenues.
CURRENT PRIORITIES
Affordability: An estimated one third of CUWA agency customers struggle to pay their water bills. Due to rising utility costs and legal constraints on local customer assistance programs, addressing water affordability requires state and federal support.
Technical Assistance: CUWA serves as a Technical Assistance (TA) Provider under the State's SAFER Program, working with small, disadvantaged communities to develop and implement sustainable solutions for drinking water challenges.
